Congratulations to Downers Grove North senior Robby Prescott on an all-state second in the Class 3A 1,600-meter run (lifetime-best 4:16.52) at the boys track and field state meet finals Saturday, May 28, at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Prescott took the lead with 300 meters left and only was passed down the stretch by Sandburg senior Sean Torpy (4:15.13), who earlier anchored the Eagles’ state-championship 3,200 relay to 7:37.36 – the fastest reported time in the nation this season. Prescott battled to hold off Minooka junior Soren Knudsen (3rd, 4:17.10), who like Prescott was running the race fresh.
Prescott equaled the Trojans’ highest placing in the event at state and is the closest ever among the three runners-up timewise (1.39 seconds) to winning the state title in his respective race.
In Class AA competition, Downers North's Ed Riegert (4:14.18) was second in 1996 by 1.78 seconds to York’s Marius Bakken (4:12.40), who earlier won the 3,200, and Downers North's Tony Laskowski (4:16.94) was second in 1988 by 2.10 seconds to Centralia’s Nick Schwartz (4:14.84). Boys track and field began competition in three classes in 2009.
At the 2014 state finals, Downers North junior Ryan Clevenger was just .86 from first as he ran a school-record 4:11.20, but he was third overall, .005 from second place (4:11.199 to 4:11.194). Clevenger was fourth at state in 2015 (4:11.22).
In Friday’s state preliminaries, Prescott advanced to the 12-runner finals with the 10th fastest qualifying time (4:19.45). Prescott ran a then lifetime-best 4:18.36 for third place at the Downers North Sectional, which advanced to state by beating the 4:21.42 state cut.
Prescott will compete next season for Eastern Illinois.
