DGN at Silver Meet

Monday, May 18 2015

Downers Grove North seniors Nick Janicki and Max Sale pulled off some successful déjà vu at the West Suburban Conference Silver Division Meet Saturday, May 16, at Glenbard West.

For the second year in a row, Janicki (160 feet-2 inches) and Sale (150-1) finished 1-2 in the event with respective marks of 162-4 and 150-5, respectively.

The Trojans (56 points) finished sixth. Oak Park-River Forest (151 points) won the title convincingly over York (85) and Glenbard West (82) after pulling out the indoor title 116-115 over York March 21. Lyons Township (69) and Proviso West (64) were fourth and fifth and Hinsdale Central (50) seventh.

With the Downers Grove South Sectional approaching Friday, May 22, Janicki and senior Ryan Clevenger achieved state-qualifying standards in their respective events Saturday. Entries qualify for state automatically with top-two sectional finishes or by achieving state-qualifying standards at the sectional, regardless of place.

Janicki is a returning state qualifier in the discus, which has a state-qualifying standard of 156-6. Sale also took third in shot put (47-1).

In the 3,200-meter run, Clevenger was second (9:16.93) in the 3,200-meter run to Oak Park-River Forest sophomore Irwin Loud (9:14.13). Loud, who later won the 1,600 (4:20.49), posted the No. 5 season-best outdoor 3,200 this season in Illinois, according to DyeStatIL.

Clevenger moved up to No. 10 in the 3,200 and under the 9:29.04 qualifying standard. He is coming off an all-time school-record 1:53.90 in the 800 May 9 at Hinsdale Central, which ranks No. 3 this season and broke the former record of 1:54.44 by graduated Tony Zea for fourth place in the 2014 state meet finals. The state cut is 1:57.24.

Junior Zack Hogan was third in triple jump (42-9 1/4), winning a tiebreaker based on next best jump with Hinsdale Central junior Kareem Muhammad, who also would compete in the Downers South Sectional.

Senior Jack Diamond ran a lifetime-best 1:59.34 for fourth in a highly competitive 800.

Two sophomores excelled with lifetime bests. Joe Keys was fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles (41.93) and fifth in the 110 high hurdles (15.67) after a 15.94 in prelims. Alec Danner was fifth in the 1,600 (4:28.56).

The 3,200 relay of seniors Zac Christensen and Joe Carter, junior Robby Prescott and Diamond (in 8:23.08) and the 800 relay of junior Anthony Giordano, sophomore Andrew Marszewski, freshman Mike Taylor and sophomore Tariun Triplett (in 1:33.67) were sixth.

The Downers Grove North sophomores were sixth (32 points) as several athletes that helped them win the indoor Silver title for the first time were up competing with the varsity Saturday.

The third-place 400 relay of freshmen Drew Shelly, Logan Harmon and Brandon Finklea and sophomore Zharion Jackson (45.69) broke the outdoor sophomore-level school record of 45.5 manual (45.74 FAT converted) from 1982.

Freshman Ryan Birkmeier was third in the 1,600 (4:38.34), only .48 behind first-place Hinsdale Central sophomore Ethan Planson (4:37.86).
